Sex and the Synapse: How Getting Busy Might Boost Your Brainpower | Sexy Science Series
The saying goes, “Use it or lose it.” While that usually applies to muscles, recent research says it might also apply to… your memory. Yep. According to scientists, having sex frequently might actually improve your ability to remember things. Who knew sex and memory went hand in hand, well, maybe.
Suddenly forgetting where you left your car keys doesn’t seem like a personality flaw. It just might mean you need more quality time between the sheets. In the name of science, of course.
🧬 The Research: From Rats to Recall
Before we get too hot and bothered, let’s talk about the actual science. It all started with some romantically inclined rodents.
Researchers at Princeton University conducted a study in 2010 showing that male rats who had daily sexual activity for two weeks developed more neurons in their hippocampus, the brain’s memory hub. Leuner et al., 2010
Not only did these little Casanova rats grow brain cells, but they also showed improved cognitive function. So essentially: more nookie = more neurons. Yay!
Fast forward to 2013, and another study confirmed that sexually active rats had better brain plasticity and memory performance. Translation: The more action they got, the smarter they became.
👩🎓 Humans, Turns Out, Aren’t So Different
Now, we know what you’re thinking: “Cool for the rats, but what about us actual humans who wear pants?”
A 2017 study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior Wenger et al., 2017 asked 78 heterosexual women (ages 18–29) about their sexual frequency and then tested their memory.
The result? Women who reported having more frequent sex performed better on verbal memory tasks (like remembering abstract words), although no improvement was found for recognizing faces.
Why? Scientists believe it’s because verbal memory is also linked to the hippocampus. Yep, the same brain region boosted by those frisky rats.
So next time you ace trivia night, feel free to thank your sexual partner.
👵👴 Senior Sex and Sharp Minds
It’s not just young adults who reap the benefits.
A 2016 study published in Age and Ageing Wright & Jenks, 2016 looked at adults aged 50 to 89 and found that those who engaged in more frequent sexual activity scored higher on word recall and fluency tests.
In short: Keeping it spicy in your golden years could help keep your brain golden too. Cognitive enhancement without the crossword puzzles? Yes, please.
🤔 But… Is This Cause or Just Sexy Correlation?
Let’s not throw away the Sudoku books just yet.
None of the studies say that sex causes better memory, they only suggest a strong correlation. That means people who have more sex might also have healthier lifestyles, better relationships, or less stress, which all contribute to better memory.
Still, wouldn’t it be a shame not to test the theory yourself? For science, of course. Again.

Bangin’ Brain Benefits?
Here’s what we do know:
• The hippocampus, your brain’s memory center, seems to benefit from sexual activity.
• Regular sex may boost verbal memory in younger women.
• Older adults who stay sexually active show improved cognitive performance.
• Animal studies show a clear link between sexual activity and brain cell growth.
So if you’ve ever forgotten your Wi-Fi password, maybe it’s time to close your laptop, turn on some Marvin Gaye, and stimulate your synapses the old fashioned way. Yes, let’s get it on.
🧠 A Brainy Bedroom Strategy
It turns out that sex might just be the brain food we didn’t know we needed. So next time someone asks why you’re prioritizing intimacy, you can answer, “I’m doing it for my memory!”
And if that doesn’t work, just remind them, frequent sex is cheaper than ginkgo biloba supplements.
